• Number of mortgages approved for purchases fell 7% in March • Figure is 25% lower than the same month last year The number of mortgages approved for house purchases by banks fell by 7% in March, figures showed today, suggesting talk of a recovery in the housing market may be premature. The British Bankers’ Association (BBA) said its members had approved 26,097 loans for house purchases over the month, down from 28,024 in February.
